I really have nothing to comment on as pretty much all of our free time has been taken up by marathon-ing season 5 of Castle. I'm glad we're almost done. Mostly because it would be nice to have a touch more variety in our free time. But the season has been pretty good. Strangely filled with movie homages (lovely wife calls them rip-offs) but good. The 100th episode (a Rear Window nod) was rather funny. Although I'm still not impressed with the new season...
I've been playing San Juan and Ghost Stories on the iPad. They are both well done. Ghost Stories is insanely hard. I'm starting to understand how it works a little better, but I am nowhere close to winning. In a related tidbit, the iOS version of Pandemic comes out today. Looks like it's about $7. Will probably pick that one up as the boardgame is pretty fun.

It's cold outside
I contemplated calling you all Baby in that title. But I refrained. You're welcome. But it is indeed quite chilly here.
I finished reading The Nerdist Way or whatever that book was called. Geeky self help style book. Had some interesting ideas. I think one of the ones I really want to look into is de-cluttering. It is sadly probably time for me to throw away a bunch of my old magazines. Alas.
Season 4 of Castle is fine. The working with the CIA episode was a little sillier the second time through. I'm not sure how/why we managed to catch that one when it originally aired, but I remember it. Although I didn't remember the twist at the end. Funny.
Introduced Dad to Ugg-tect last night. It was amusing. The boys managed to eke out a victory over the girls. Guess we still manage to prove the old saw that guys are better at spatial relations than girls...
Glad Christmas is around the corner. Only sort of ready for it. Even more glad that it is accompanied by some time off. Really hoping to decompress some again. Hopefully get some games played with family and friends. Wil Wheaton did a google+ hangout that you can find over at the Geek and Sundry channel about Tabletop. It was pretty interesting. He had a couple nice stories about playing games with his kids while they were growing up. Apparently NBC found Tabletop interesting enough that they're trying to rip it off to turn into a prime time show. I doubt it will be quite as interesting. Especially as I can't picture them actually playing interesting games.
Hope you all have a wonderful holiday and can spend it with those you love.

Winter is here
Not so much due to snow as the sudden drop in temperature. I suspect we're now officially in the chillier temperature mode of the season. Which is fine. I don't mind the cold too much. As long as there's a blanket somewhere...
Not really anything else to say about Roadside Picnic. It was good. I'm now going through a geeky, improve your life sort of book as well as Breed which is a sort of reverse Rosemary's Baby kinda thing from the sounds of it. And nothing says Merry Christmas like a reverse Rosemary's Baby sorta thing.
Got to go to J & K's wedding reception last night. That was nice. Got to see a couple of old Ovid co-workers as well. And that was fun too. Lovely wife managed to represent for us at the wedding itself. I was too busy fighting with a printer to get away.
We watched Lake Mungo over the weekend and it was kind of amazing. It starts out as what you think will be a sort of run of the mill ghost story done as documentary sort of film but there are some pretty nifty surprises waiting for you in the film. I recommend this one. Except that while we were watching it, some of the should be spooky ghost scenes were too dark to see what was supposed to be going on. Not sure if this was the fault of the film or our tv settings. I think it was the version of the film we were watching. Little sis should give this one a go on Netflix. K might appreciate it too.
We're finally starting to make our way through Castle season 4 (I believe). The first few episodes were pretty good. I still like the banter.
Glad that Dad will be in town next week. Will be good to see him again and have him around through Christmas. Hard to believe that's as close as it is. Still have a touch of Christmas shopping to do, but we're pretty close to being done.
Oh and I'm no longer sort of addicted to Haggis on the iPad. It's full blown now. Such a fun little game.

Brain hazy, ask again later
I am far too incoherent to muster anything resembling rational thought. The head cold that wouldn't leave is rearing its head again and I'm trying in vain to muddle through. So in no particular order:
King of Tokyo is still fun and was a big hit at K & B's over the weekend. As was Dwarf King. We got slaughtered at Elder Sign but I still enjoy it. Also I am very bad at "Mormon Rummy". I believe Dad and littlest sis tried to teach us this game some time ago, but I think it had a different name. Trick taking game where you use progressively fewer cards. You get points for correctly guessing how many tricks you will take.
I have had a strange desire to read some Addams Family comics and so have checked out a book to enable me to do so.
I have a theory about Castle. Mostly because I am reading the third book. (It's good) I have decided that Castle and Beckett will never get together on the TV show because they've gotten together in the books. So, all you fans wanting them to finally do something? Read the books. Actually this is a pretty clever solution if it's what they're doing. Hollywood isn't quite that bright, so I have my doubts, but I suppose anything is possible. Oh and I'm stating for the record right now: Castle's Dad totally killed Beckett's Mom. This is all based on randomly watching the last two episodes for no better reason than they were on. And we happened to be flipping channels. Maybe they were better if you've been watching the whole season...
Mostly because we were slightly introduced to it over the weekend, I threw the Lite version of Minecraft on the iPad. It's surprisingly fun. I may break down and pony up the dough for the full version. If for no other reason than it would be nice to have things save in the world. The creepers are creepy too.
Rhythm Heaven Fever for the Wii is the good kind of frustrating. Except for when it isn't. It would be nice to have some sort of feedback on exactly why you're passing/failing levels. But other than that the games are fun and it's nice to have another rhythm game to obsess over.
And that's really all I can bring myself to comment on at this time. Looking forward to seeing littlest sis next week. The house is about to be overrun by Girl Scout cookies. And I need a nap. Seriously.

Christmas time slip
I got nothin'.
Had a lovely conversation with K the other day. Although I forgot to direct her to the Doubleclicks in case she missed that post. It was good catching up. I still think you should stake out the vanquished squirrels as a deterrent.
Castle season 3 continues to trundle along. I've mostly given up following the plots and just enjoy the banter.
Uncharted 3 also continues. The spider/scarab/evil bug things continue to freak us all out. Speaking of creepy spiders, I recommend you all read I'm a Shark. Because it is awesome. Almost as awesome as the shark.
And really that's about all I can think of. I should really contemplate some sort of seasonal wrap up. We'll see. If nothing else I hope you're all having a wonderful December.

Something about a goose getting fat?
The Christmas bug has arrived at Casa del 'd'. The kids seem to think there will be presents or something. I have no idea why they have that impression. They've been little hellions all year. I think we'll go the coal route next year. Certainly cheaper. Theoretically. Maybe we'll give them "get your own coal" IOUs attached to a pick or something. We're pretty close to the end of the foraging for bits and bobs. Honestly I think we're just down to lovely wife and I to shop for. Which has been more of a challenge than it should be.
We're currently wandering through season 3 of Castle. It's been fine so far. I hear it gets a little silly towards the end. Too many fake deaths. We shall see. I still enjoy the banter between Castle and Beckett though so that's good. And how adorable is his daughter? Seriously adorable.
Letter 'r' gave me the Leaders expansion for 7 Wonders so we'll see how that plays soon. Looking through it leads me to believe it will offer some pretty intriguing choices while playing. That's good. Have had the desire to play more boardgames lately, but not been able to accomplish it. Castle and Uncharted are the main obstacles...
Hope you're all having a wonderful holiday season. Now if I can just get the kids to stop putting together all the lego advent figures. It is seriously my turn...

Owls and such
300 + owls - blood = Legend of the Guardians (the Owls of Ga'hoole). Given that it was directed by Zack Snyder this should not be a surprise. It was actually pretty decent to watch. Standard fantasy fare to be sure, but fun nonetheless. And some of the animation was amazing. The rain and fire sequences especially. So very pretty. There are worse ways to spend some time with your kids. Or whoever you watch movies with.
We finished off Castle season 2 and now I want to watch season 3. Why is it not on DVD yet? Because it's tied down to a broadcast schedule is not really a good reason. I've really come to enjoy this show, I look forward to more of it.
We had ourselves a game day this past weekend and much fun was had. We played Dixit, 7 Wonders, Sequence, Zooloretto, and a couple others. We also learned to play Blokus. It's quite good as well. I have a sneaking suspicion it may make its way into our home sooner rather than later. You can pick up a pretty nice version for the PS3 in their online store for around $5. We may have to convince little sis to do this so we can play online against them. Well, after we add each other as friends.
I also have a lovely Nintendo customer service story. I'd always heard about how they treated their customers well and I can now confirm it. G went to play Lego Star Wars the other day and the Wii wouldn't take the disc. It also made a strange noise upon powering up the unit. After some brief online searching it was discovered that this could really only be fixed with a repair at ye olde Nintendo. So I called up Nintendo only to be told that our machine was out of warranty and would need to send some money to get it fixed. I asked if they had any loyal customer discounts and the wonderful service rep gave me a one time waiver on the service fee. So the Wii is on its way to California to be fixed. Hopefully it will come back with all our saved game data. Thanks Nintendo for remembering your customers.
(DirecTV on the other hand does not win any customer service points, but that's probably a story for another time.)
A belated happy birthday shout out to nephew K. Hope you had a great day little dude.

Insert witty Castle joke here
Season 2 of Castle has been pretty decent thus far. The mystery plots are pretty secondary to the banter and I'm fine with that. It's certainly worth watching on DVD.
Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson was a fun fantasy book. It features a pretty unique magic system and some fun characters. Lots of little twists and turns before wrapping things up. I suspect I'll read more of his work now. I've heard his Mistborn series is worth checking out as well. It's nice to find some more fantasy again.
Death of a Scriptwriter is a Hamish Macbeth story by M.C. Beaton. If you've been here a while, you might recall me mentioning that we enjoyed the TV series. The books are fun too. Nice little mystery story. Makes me want to watch the show again...
In other news G has been practicing his writing by writing down little stories. Thus far we have had The Fish and the Turtle, The Shark, the Fish and the Dolphin and The Dragon's Gold. One of the stories featured a human on fire and one featured a lovely dinner for a hungry aquatic animal. Hmm. He may be ready for shark week now.
In other other news I got to tell a couple at the Library that it wasn't really the appropriate place to be making out.
I managed to finish off the first Uncharted. It was a lot of fun. I've started the second one and it had one of the best beginnings to a video game I've seen in a long time. Really enjoying this series. And Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is a frustratingly good time. My driving skill are not that spectacular. But it's a lot of fun to try. Donkey Kong Country Returns is pretty good as well. The collector in me is going to hate this game as some of the levels are fiendishly difficult. I may never finish the bonus temple levels. In spite of G telling me to try at every other moment.
The girls explored mummification for their science projects. At least there were no coat hangers involved. I'm sleeping with one eye open just to be safe.

Just passing through
Well, in spite of the airline industry I did manage to make it to my Grandmother's funeral. It was really nice to see family again. It was good to touch base with the aunts and uncles and Grandpa. I'm glad he has family close by.
I managed to finish Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi on the plane. I liked the book. Nailer is part of a ship breaking crew - he crawls through wrecked hulks in search of copper and other things that can be sold. After a storm he and a friend run across a wrecked ship that could be the end of all their troubles. Except for the lone survivor. Bacigalupi builds an interesting world that I enjoyed reading about. It did seem like something was missing, I don't know if the end came too quick or the plot was a little too predictable, but I certainly recommend it. (And honestly, as it's a YA book, those slight criticisms only sort of apply.)
Other than that I'm glad to have some time off. With everything that's been going on it's nice to have a break and recharge the batteries. We've been watching the first season of Castle and I have to say, had I actually watched the show from the beginning I'd have liked it a lot better than the random episode I started with. (Oh and the recent X Files inspired episode was pretty brilliant.)
Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Spend some time with family if you can. A good book if you can't.

Your regularly scheduled post
First order of business: Mu Shu Pork and Bang Bang Shrimp were both cooked and consumed last week. And they were both good. The Mu Shu Pork was a little on the time intensive side to prepare, but was rather tasty. The shrimp was certainly easier to prepare but was slightly less tasty. Which is a little odd as I tend to like spicy things. Not that they were that spicy. We did manage to avoid one mishap when lovely wife accidentally picked up cooked shrimp instead of raw. I suspect it's not wise to fry already cooked shrimp. So yes, new recipes and mostly a success. Yay!
And now for a brief tangent. Working at a Library is a bit of a fascinating thing. Mostly as I am an avid reader and now I have a reading list that I will never ever ever finish. But working here has mostly sated my purchase new book urge. Partially due to advance reader copies and partially because pretty much anything I might want to read is readily available. I might have to wait some, but it will be available. So I don't go out of my way to purchase things unless it's an author I especially like or a book I really like.
I am currently reading such a book. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is quite simply one of the best books I've read in recent memory. And I've read a lot. I won't go into much detail as I've not yet finished it, but if you like fantasy books you really must track this one down. Absolutely brilliant. I don't want to finish reading this one because then it will be over. I suspect I'll have to track down my own copy of this one.
Oh and I must also plug Mouse Guard again. It really is quite good.
We've been catching random episodes of Castle lately. It's nice in a Nathan Fillion fix sort of way, but the show itself is a little silly. Of the handful of episodes I've seen they telegraphed the ending within the first few minutes twice. I don't consider myself that good a mystery sleuth so I'm guessing these plots are pretty see through. But it does have Nathan Fillion. And the lady from the third Librarian movie. So I guess that's something.
Now off with you, I've a book to finish.
