The Other Normals by Ned Vizzini was pretty fun to read. It's a YA book geared towards boys, especially the tabletop gaming variety. (*cough* D&D *cough*) Oh sorry, it's C&C in the book's world, but whatever. There are some brief moments of crude boy humor, but mostly it follows Perry as he tries to do the thing called growing up. With the help of some folks from a parallel world. You'll know pretty quick if you're going to like it or not. It's a pretty quick read too, so it's at least worth looking at if you like YA fantasy-ish sorts of things.
I've started watching Indie Game: The Movie while I exercise. It's interesting and sort of depressing.
In other news I am almost officially old. And in dire need of a vacation. Fortunately I have one of those next week. Happy early Thanksgiving to all of you. I hope you can spend it with those you love and that there's a side dish on the table that you really enjoy.
Apparently M had the opportunity to write about her favorite games the other day. I thought maybe she'd pick Summoner Wars when lovely wife was relating the story, but apparently she went with Betrayal at House on the Hill (which I might have guessed if I'd thought about it a bit more) followed by Mansions of Madness and Elder Sign. I was unaware that she'd actually played Mansions of Madness except for maybe that initial game back when we got it and I was trying to sort out the rules. It's certainly an interesting trio of games to pick. Guess I'll have to get her reading some Lovecraft now...
Still haven't made it to Wreck it Ralph. And now Skyfall is out as well... Silly movies.

Title, title, who's got the title?
Finished reading Jaws the other day. I read that book a long time ago and remember thinking it was different from the movie, but not much more than that. Reading it this time I mostly found it depressing. First, for a book about a shark, there's very little shark. Until the final Moby Dick-esque final act. It focuses mostly on the town and the people in it and they ways they cope with this threat to their town and livelihood. It's not really that pleasant reading about their lives and marriages falling apart. Although it does serve as a decent reminder that life is pretty fragile and all it takes to disrupt things is a giant man-eating fish.
Now I want fish tacos...
I've also made it through The Monstrumologist. I haven't decided what I think of it yet. It was much more gruesome than I was expecting. But good. Certainly a nice prelude to October and horror movie season.
Introduced the letter 'r' to Rivals for Catan over the weekend. He concurs that it is indeed a fine game. I'm really looking forward to some serious boardgaming in the next couple months. We got the shirts for Drucon all made up. They look pretty darn good I must say. I think I may have to start making some bleach shirts with patterns and what not on them. I really liked the way these turned out.
Mom's birthday was this past week. She is missed. And thoughts and prayers go out to little sis.
Also, lovely wife and I might test an old maxim about friendships in the next couple months.
We finished off the anime version of Supernatural. I suspect we're going to try watching the regular version now. Also we watched Season of the Witch an odd little movie starring Nic Cage and Ron Perlman. It was kind of silly, kind of fun. Oh yeah, The Mentalist starts back up tonight. That's grand.

Media Consumption
I will try and cover the various things that have been seen and/or read at casa del 'd' recently. I'm not sure I'm up to the task...
Triangle is a pretty fascinating horror movie. Without giving too much away, it's basically a retelling of the Sisyphus story. There are some pretty neat moments in it. Rather liked this one and recommend it. Especially for little sis and 'k'.
Big Bang Theory season 3 is pretty decent too. Although they use Sheldon's Bazinga! joke a little too much. Except for the ball pit sequence. That was pure comedy gold.
The Fuller Memorandum by Charles Stross was also quite good. I really do like the Laundry Files books. I was a little worried that this one would be completely depressing. Fortunately it's only somewhat depressing. And there are a few images that will stick with you for quite some time. Cultists indeed...
Hikaru no Go. I've read a couple more books and I think I may be done with this series. I've read enough that at this point it's really just more of the same. (Some of you probably marveled that it took 21 volumes for me to reach that point, but whatever.)
Fullmetal Alchemist I've read a couple more of this series and am enjoying it quite a bit. Plan to continue this one.
There's probably more, but I can't be bothered to remember what it was. Alas.
In other news, we're just about ready for the holidays. Family members are coming in to town so that should be nice. The kids have one day of school left before they have their break until next year. (Next year! Who let that happen already?!) I can't think of any particularly amazing stories worth sharing. Oh, if you want painted room pictures, head over to littles sis's blog. She has a couple. I may or may not get some put up.

In which the Year Ends
And really, it's probably about time. In a lot of ways I've managed to avoid most of the problems 2009 presented for everyone else - I kept my job and the economy didn't completely kill us as we live pretty stripped down as it is. But I'm certainly ready for things to return to a more even keel. So, get on that 2010. I suppose a monolith is a little too much to wish for as 2001 presented us with a striking lack of the real thing. Maybe we'll attempt a manned mission to Jupiter just for grins and chuckles. Although I suspect Mars has a little more priority.
Casa del 'd' had a pretty decent Christmas. The kids had a good time (and the adults did too). The girls only got up 3 times before I yelled at them at 4:30 to knock it off. I wouldn't have minded but lovely wife and father-in-law seem to think you're supposed to sleep in on Christmas. Madness I tell you. We managed to get everyone up around 7 and had presents and breakfast and so on.
It's definitely more interesting (for me) having a boy around the house on Christmas. Now we have an excuse to get cool things like race tracks and Nerf guns and Lego and ... well you get the idea. We had a lot of fun putting things together and then playing with them. I can recommend the Shake n Go race track thing (eh ask lovely wife what it's really called) and Nerf guns are pretty fun too. We got to build a fun dragon lego set courtesy of father-in-law.
As a family we got Pitchcar (thanks Dad!) and it remains a lot of fun. We even got lovely wife's Dad to play. And have a good time too. So if you are ever looking for a game that literally just about anybody will play and have a good time with, this is it. It is a little expensive, but so so worth it.
There have probably been some amusing stories in the last couple weeks, but I've got no idea what they are. I learned that the mail room here at the Library is capable of maintaining sub zero temperatures quite nicely and the postage machine will not work in such conditions. Envelopes won't seal, postage stickers will only sort of stick, the ink won't work, you get the idea. And I got to spend most of that day in that room. I wore my coat. It sort of helped. I eventually got feeling back in my hands...
We've seen lots of movies. Alvin and his Merry Chipmunk Friends Make the Goo Goo Eyes at the Conveniently Female Chipmunk Band... err the sequel (I will not write what they're really calling it) was as horrible as you might imagine. Which of course means the kids loved it. Star Trek was still good. Night at the Museum 2 was a lot of fun as was Up. I really liked those last two (which goes to show that kid's entertainment need not alienate the adults).
We've played lots of games. I can recommend New Super Mario Bros. Wii as well as Wii Sports Resort. The archery levels are fun as are the sword fighting levels. Don't much care for the frisbee golf. We'll see if it grows on me any. And I'm having a good time with the new Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Not for kids, but fun for me.
Hopefully you got to spend Christmas with those you love. If not, hopefully next year provides you with those opportunities. I don't really have any profound thoughts to share as this year draws to a close and the next one starts. It happens often enough that we're all pretty used to it by now. The girls will attempt to stay up and ring in the new year, but I think I may just head to bed. So have a great New Year. And get off my lawn.
Oh and a quick resolution. I'm going to try to include more pictures next year. Not of the kids of course, that's crazy talk, but I really hope to put up some pictures of the games we're playing and so on. The kids might be in some of them, but really, since when was this blog about them...
